Larimar was reportedly discovered in 1916 by Father Miguel Domingo Fuertes Loren, but wasn't mined until decades later in 1974 when Dominican Miguel Méndez and Peace Corps volunteer Norman Rilling noticed a piece of larimar on the Barahonas province shoreline. Named for Miguel's daughter, Larissa, and "mar," the Spanish word for "sea," larimar captures the exquisite beauty of the Caribbean Sea.Larimar, also called "Stefilia's Stone", is a rare blue variety of the silicate mineral pectolite found only in the Dominican Republic, in the Caribbean. Its coloration varies from white, light-blue, green-blue to deep blue.Larimar is the blue variety of pectolite, which was later named Larimar. A very rare mineral, it has only been found in the Dominican Republic. Discovered only in 1974, Larimar is hard to find outside of the Caribbean. By chemical composition, Larimar is a hydrated sodium calcium silicate with manganese, and has a hardness of 4.5 to 5 on the Mohs scale. Larimar is used quite a bit by certain reflexologists in order to clear blockages and discover disease and illness in the body. It can also be used for pain management when applied directly to the affected area. Great for the feet and joints.
Larimar is considered a healing stone and said to be finely tuned to the human body particularly to the throat area. It is said that it increases speech and communication skills and supports the body’s natural healing process. Persons believing in this have been known to wear Larimar jewelry or to put pieces of Larimar in their pockets or under their pillows. Larimar is also called the Atlantis Stone, because a Spiritual master who lived in Trinidad and Tobago and who founded many Yoga Centers across the world, claimed that some islands in the Caribbean including the Dominican Republic were part of the lost continent of Atlantis. He went further to say that on one of those islands a blue stone with healing powers would be found – a description that corresponds to Larimar. Today, there are thousands of people, naturalists and persons practicing alternative and holistic healing methods, who use Larimar to assist and reinforce healing processes.
Larimar’s beautiful blue color is often considered to embody the beautiful blue colors of the sea and sky found in the Caribbean. Its origin and appearance have made it popularly known as the Caribbean Gem.
